What happened?
-
On 29th January, we experienced an issue with our drive on the EU server.
-
As a result, the server had to be switched off, and data recovery was required.
-
Since then we have replaced the server and are continuing to work on restoration of the lost data files
Why did this happen?
-
The backup process before the problem was too slow, meaning that some data collected in the days before the problems with the disk were not saved as expected
-
To prevent this from happening again, we have invested in a completely revamped backup system for both our US and EU data centres (you can read more about that here).
Current status
Following an in-depth analysis of the problematic disk, we have determined that some files actually can be recovered. However, the recovery process is time-consuming.
-
We are currently creating a full backup image of the affected disk. This process is slow and is expected to continue until approximately 12th February
-
Once the backup is completed, we will begin recovering files from the disk. This stage may take around 10 days
-
By the end of February, we expect to have recovered all recoverable survey and experiment data files
| We cannot predict how successful the ultimate data recovery will be |
| Integrating the recovered files with ongoing surveys may not be straightforward. Once the recovery process is complete, we will develop a strategy to manage this effectively. |
