About this survey

Informed Consent and Description of Research (online study on the effect of seeing faces on performance on a language task, and the role of psychological control)

You are to participate in a research coordinated by Dr. Alexander Logemann. You can participate in the current study if you are between 18 - 50 years old, and if you are heterosexual. You cannot participate if you are using drugs or are diagnosed with a neurological or psychological disorder. The research is carried out by highly qualified experts. The aim of this study is to explore the effect of previous exposure (i.e. seeing faces) on language performance. In addition, we evaluate the role of mindful state, personality and psychological control (specifically, stopping ability and attention). If you provide your informed consent, you will be requested to fill out a couple of questionnaires. Upon completion, you will be asked to perform a computer task which takes approximately 3 minutes. In that task, some pictures require a simple keyboard button press, and some pictures require a response to be withheld.  Next, a couple of pictures of individuals or neutral colour pictures will be presented and you are requested to rate the attractiveness/appeal of the pictures. Afterwards, you are requested to perform the last computer task which takes approximately 5 minutes. In that task you will have to determine whether two letter-strings contain a non-word. Performing the various tasks and filling out the questionnaires is harmless without any detrimental after-effects. The total duration of the experiment will be approximately 20 minutes.

Participation is utterly voluntary. It is possible to withdraw from the experiment at any time without having to provide your reasons to do so. There is no monetary incentive for participation. The results of this study will later be used in publications and will also be presented at scientific conferences. If requested, written or verbal information will be provided on these events.

Data will be collected anonymously during this experiment and no personal data will be obtained.

All information collected during the research process will be handled strictly confidentially. Data obtained during the research is coded and stored on a secure computer. Data of the experiment are analyzed statistically and no personal identification is possible. No medical or laboratory report will be prepared about the results of the study.

By proceeding you agree that data collected on your person - which cannot be identified as those belonging to your person - may be used for research purposes and that these will be accessible to other researchers. I reserve the right to terminate my participation at any time in which case the data belonging to my person should be erased.

I declare that I am between 18 - 50 years of age, I am not diagnosed with any neurological or psychological disorder. I have not been using drugs the last 7 days. I have received full detailed information concerning the conditions of my participation of the study.
