About this study
Participant Information Sheet
Title of project: Associations between social media addiction, attention, short-form media use, like TikTok, and long-form media use.
My name is Jake Boyle. I am a MSc Cyberpsychology student in the Department of Psychology at Nottingham Trent University. I would like to invite you to take part in a short study, there is no obligation to take part and there will be no adverse consequences to your studies if you decide not to participate.
What is the study about?
This study investigates how often you use different types of media, your addiction to social media, your ability to pay attention, and your wellbeing (including your depression, anxiety, and stress, and adhd symptomatology).
What is the aim of this study?
To understand the relationship between attention and social media addiction, new “short-form” social media (like TikTok) compared to traditional social media (like Instagram, Facebook), and other forms of media (reading, film/TV, podcasts, etc.).
What does the study involve?
Participants will be required to complete consent to this information sheet and then complete several questionnaires and a digital task.
Right to withdraw
Your participation in this study is purely voluntary. If you wish to withdraw at any time during the study you can simply close your browser. You do not have to give a reason for terminating the study. You are also entitled to withdraw your data from the study up to 2 weeks after you have taken part. Please email us with your unique identifier (which you will provide on the next form). Please note that in this instance, your anonymity may be compromised. This is because many
email addresses contain a person's name, therefore a temporary link may be formed between your name and data before it is destroyed.
What will happen to data collected?
The data will be handled only by members of the research team, in line with data protection principles and our approved research protocol. Hard copies of research notes are kept in locked filing cabinets, and electronic files are kept on password protected computers which are not accessible to any other university staff. Upon completing the project (the end of the academic year), all data will be destroyed.
If you are not using SONA, you will not be identifiable in the research, even to the researchers, unless you contact us with your unique identifier. Upon completing the project (the end of the academic year), all data will be destroyed.
If you are using SONA, due to granting research credits, participants names and user ID will be visible to the researcher. Therefore, anonymity cannot be guaranteed.
Please note that if any data submitted discloses illegal activity, I may have to report it, and any cases of actual or potential child abuse, or other forms of harm to third parties will be reported.
