About this survey

Feelings about being a parent, or being childless

Thank you for your interest in this survey. Please take a moment to read this information.

Although being a parent is a popular choice for many people, others prefer a life without children, and others find they are unable to have children. This survey is about people’s thoughts about being a parent, what makes people decide to be childless, and feelings around problems in having children. We are also interested in whether men and women make these decisions differently, and whether sexual orientation has an impact on how people feel about parenting. The survey takes about 20 minutes to complete. When taking the survey, please do not use the in-browser forward and back buttons, as this can cause errors. If you are aged 18 or over, we would like to hear your point of view.

Some questions are about mental health and medical issues, and some people may be sensitive to these. Please be assured that your responses are anonymous, in other words there is no way that you can be identified just by answering the questions in the questionnaire. If you decide to withdraw from the study you can do so at any time without any problem. Your answers won’t be submitted unless you click the ‘submit’ button at the end of the survey, so even if you start the questionnaire you can still change your mind about finishing the survey. The overall results of the survey will be published online (http://www.malepsychology.org.uk) around the winter of 2017. These results will be a summary of the combined scores of all the people in the survey, in other words no individual results or identifying information will be published.

The survey is entirely voluntary, anonymous, and confidential. It has been given ethical approval by the University College London Research Ethics Committee (Project ID number 4075/010). All data will be kept safe and secure in accordance with the Data Protection Act 1998. There are no immediate benefits to you of filling the survey, apart from knowing that you are contributing to something that may help people in the future.
